With the whole-house or home air purifiers, one needs to bear in mind:
a. This can purify many rooms throughout the building at the same time.

d. You generally have the option of turning the air filtering process “on” without the heating or cooling system needing to be on as well.

Portable units are best used when:
a. Air cleaning is needed in single or possibly just a few rooms.
b. You need to get a purifying system operating quickly.
c. You need to clean air in a localized area.
d. You want close control of the appliance.
e. You need a silent or minimum maintenance design.

The Efficiency of an Air Cleaner
The efficiency rating of air purifiers is determined by measuring the particle size that the different appliances can filter or remove. The smaller the particles, the greater the health threat as they become lodged deeper within your lungs. HEPA filters within mechanical filters and electronic air cleaners that can effectively take out both large and small particles.
An attempt has been made to compare portable air purifiers by calibrating the volume of air cleaned. However, since it gives no indication of what particles can be purified, it is of somewhat limited use and possibly confusing. This is known as the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR).
