Ionic Air Purifiers – How Negative Ions clean air: The ionic air purifier uses its unique system of air-ionization for removing airborne dust particles. As a recent invention (from the late 1970’s), these appliances are continually undergoing modification and improvement. Today’s ionic air cleaners are far more sophisticated than their predecessors.
The advantages of Ionic air purifying appliances
- They are virtually silent air cleaning devices, particularly useful in living rooms, bedrooms and even vehicles.
- They need minimal maintenance.
- They are virtually odorless.
- They are energy efficient, with small electricity consumption.
- They mostly do not require the regular replacement of dirty, dust-laden mechanical filters.
How ionic purifying appliances or “ionizers” work:
This electronic air purifier generates a steady flow of negatively charged ions into the air. This has a dual effect. It:
- causes harmful airborne allergens as well as normal dust to fall to ground.
- freshens the air.
Why the dust goes to ground
The air ionizers use ion generators to create a continuous stream of these negative ions that automatically combine with airborne dust particles, which are normally always positively charged. These form larger dust molecules that continue to gather together and increase in weight as more negative ions continue to emerge. Finally, they become too heavy to remain in air so fall harmlessly to ground.
Ionic air cleaners using electrostatic dust removers
Many ionic cleaners are now also made with electrically charged metal plates, sometimes known as electrostatic precipitators. These metallic surfaces are oppositely charged and the floating molecules of ever-increasing size are attracted to them where they become stuck and harmless. These plates get covered in the dust and occasionally need to be wiped to retain the appliance’s air cleaning efficiency. Of course not all the dust gets drawn to the plates, some dust falls to ground and could be stirred up into the air and then fall down again until the room is vacuum-cleaned.
The Ionic Air Purifying Process Promotes Well-being
Many places of natural beauty automatically seem to uplift your spirit, and now scientists are discovering why this is. Research has found that the atmosphere around waterfalls and in mountainous regions has a higher content of negative ions. What is more, the reverse – air with an excess of positive ions - has been found to cause headaches, feelings of ill-at-ease and many similar discordant symptoms.
Since most indoor settings naturally become stale, this air ionizing function brings the added advantage of promoting well being and reducing malaise.
